Every year around this time the Grayson County Water District publishes its Annual Water Quality Report. This report, known as the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), is a requirement of the 1996 Amendments to the 1974 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). We encourage you to contact us at any time if you have questions about your water; however, the CCR is the most complete compilation of the substances that were detected in your drinking water.
Much of the language in the CCR is a word-for-word requirement of the SDWA. Topics like Source Water Assessment, Cryptosporidium, Lead, UCMR, and warnings for immunocompromised individuals fall into that category. Just because we are required to alert you to those concerns does not mean your drinking water is contaminated with those substances or organisms. Furthermore, some of the analyses are on the raw water before any treatment is done.
The heart of the CCR is the data table; here is where we list any substance that was detected in the past calendar year. Some analyses are not completed every year; in those cases, the most recent detected results are reported. Of the 108 parameters that your water is analyzed for, only those that were detected are reported. The table includes purchased water data from Leitchfield Municipal Utilities as well. Generally, areas east of the City of Leitchfield and south on Hwy 259 are served by water we purchase. If you are unsure whether you are on the purchased or produced parts of our water system, you may call our office to find out.
Whether produced by the Grayson County Water District at our water treatment plant or purchased from Leitchfield Municipal Utilities, all the water that Grayson County Water District sells comes from Rough River Lake. Many of the contaminants in Rough River are naturally occurring, but those that are of greatest concern are the man-made ones. They are more difficult and costly to remove and can have negative health affects months or even years in the future. Synthetic, volatile, and inorganic contaminants from the dumping of chemicals on the ground or directly into a body of water and improperly disposing of pharmaceuticals can degrade the raw water quality and make it more difficult and costly to treat to a potable level. Microbiological contamination from feed lot run-off and failing or non-existent septic systems are a concern as well and pose the most immediate threat to the quality of our source water.
Our Mission of ensuring your drinking water is safe, refreshing and affordable is a responsibility we take very seriously; it is a very important responsibility of us all to protect it. We can start by being more cognizant of how we dispose of our chemical, pharmaceutical, and biological waste. Keeping in mind that everything we dump on the ground or down a drain has the potential to end up in our drinking water. Once a contaminant reaches the source water the only barrier between you and it is a well operated water treatment plant. Even bottled water, no matter what is claimed on its label, has gone through a treatment process similar to the ones used at the Grayson County Water Treatment Plant and is susceptible to the same contaminants. It is far more economical and safer to prevent it from getting into the source than it is to remove it.
